Yesturday my son's truck started running rough, had no power and the engine light came on. He took it to the dealer to have them look at it thinking it might be the fuel injection or something electrical, they called back and said his #6 cylinder had no compession and that the #4 cylinder had 20% and they need to take the engine apart to find the problem. We searched this site to see if anyone else has had or herd of this problem.
He has had the rough idle problem before but the dealer could find nothing wrong, and the #6 cylinder would show up on the diognostic reading but found no problem.
The truck has 70,000 miles and maintained regularly, I thougt these engines were bullet proof and would get 150,000 miles easily or maybe the dealer is trying to screw him. He does have a warranty on the truck.
Racing perhaps and blew a hole in a valve? Or just shoddy valvesprings? Supposedly cheap gas can lead to cylinder head problems, too but mostly with valve guides.
My son had an 03 Explorer with a 3.0. He had a valve spring go bad at around 40k miles or so. It broke when he started it up after work one day and ran very rough as you describe. Sounds like they had a bad batch of valve springs.

The 03 Explorer never had the 3.0L. Only the SOHC 4.0L, and the 4.6L V-8.
If he does in fact have a warranty, then why would the dealership want to try to screw him? Let the dealer deal with the warranty company, as they are very well trained in this. That way if they are wrong, then they HAVE to make it right as warranty companies, even if it's Ford, don't screw around with that sort of thing.

The dealer called and said that a Ford tech would have to look at the motor because it looked internal. After waiting a week Ford had a tech look at the motor and determined that it needed a new head and pistons and that they would take care of it under the warranty. When we picked up the truck today we asked the dealer what the problem was and what caused it, thier quote was that there just was a problem and that it's taken care of. Well i'm glad my son had a warranty because I would have no idea what this would have cost.
