I have an '88 F-150 w/ a 302. I had dual exhaust installed a while ago (well, single pipe into a dual outlet muffler). That system rusted out and I had it replaced with the "stock" exhaust again. I don't want dual exhaust again (not in the budget right now) but I'd like to change out the muffler, more for sound rather than performance. An '88 with a 302 and 210,000 miles doesn't have much performance anyway.
Any recommendations on a muffler? Which ones will fit an '88 using the factory hangers, etc? Anyone run just the CAT and straight pipes instead of a muffler?
I've never changed out mufflers. I got the clamps loose on this one, but it frozen on the pipes. Any tips? Torch to heat it up? Sawzall?
Anything else I should know as far as the installation? Welding required or standard clamps ok?
If you still have both of the cats then running a straight pipe with a Y for duals or just single will sound pretty good and won't be too loud. You may not be able to pass inspection though. You have to have a muffler, which is stupid if its that quiet. Doing that will sound similar to a glass pack sound. A friend of mine has his setup like that. You can just put a single in/out Flowmaster or Magnaflow type muffler. I have single 3 inch on mine. I think that with factory pipes it would be 2.5 inch. I high flowing single exhaust flows plenty unless you have a high horsepower engine. You can use a sawzall and cut it just before the clamp or weld. It is highly possilbe that you will need too add a section of pipe if you change the muffler as they are usually shorter than the stock type. You can use clamps, but I prefer to have it welded.
