I recently purchased a Y-block (EBU 239) that had been rebuilt about five years ago, but was never installed. I've had my pick-up for nearly thirty years, but never got into the internal workings of the engine, so now that its complete frame-off time, please take a peek at the photos (more in my gallery) and let me know your thoughts about getting it cleaned up and ready to roll. Thanks!
i would take the pistons out and hone the walls.also take the valves out and clean everything good.some of the valves may be sticking.dont be scared to use your gaskets again unless you see some damage.clean all the rust of and you should be in business.
Check the center main as it gets the least oil (no I don't know why for sure) for scoring on the crank. It is also prone to spin the brg. I would open up all oil passages that I could and have her hot tanked. Don't forget hardened valve seats. So glade to see another Y get refreshed. "May they never die out." Best of luck to ya. Be starting on my 272 as soon as it rains this ice off so I can move her around.

If I were to use the head gaskets over I would spray paint them with aluminum or copper paint and torque them while the paint is still wet. That is what we did back in the day when the new gaskets were not much more than tin.
Hay I just remembered a guy over on the East side that has a 239 that I believe will run. only wanted $200.00 for it. pretty much complete. Mite think about swapping it in so ya can move your truck around. While going though yours. Plus think of all the parts if ya need them. let me know if interested and I will see if he still has it and have him contact you.
I'll be damned! I always thought squirrels turned the crank in a 239!
What they said, except I'm always queasy about reusing head gaskets. I would also thoroughly inspect head ports, the intake manifold, & ex. manifolds for any unwanted blockage or critters.
I am working over my 239 Y-block now and it looks no where near that good. If you happen to have a spare rod bearing, I would love to get hold of it. Apparently, the bearing can be from either an EBU or EBV block.
Thanks for the help!! This 239 is going in my 54 F100 - stripped to the frame right now and pure stock!
Arctic, thanks for the offer on the 239 but I have four of them in the garage now!! The original with a cracked block, one I picked up about twenty years ago, this one, and finally, a running one that I am dropping into the 56 F350. Yes I know, a 272 or 292 would be a better fit, but I've got a lot of parts for 239s except...
...sorry SpyFoxx, I do not have any spare rod bearings that are usable. There are two sets on e-bay now. Enter a search for 239 Ford - most of the parts will be for flatheads, but I have had luck here with hard to find parts.
Brian,
It looks like you picked your motor up. Since being out of town I havent been able to log onto FTE or check my messages, so just now was able to reregister. Hope everything went well. While I was peering through the pushrod holes in the heads just after the motor arrived, some rust was visible beginning to form on top of the lifters also. Take her apart, clean, rehone cylinders, new head gaskets, and you should be good. It will also give you peace of mind regarding thoroughness of the rebuild.
