5 speed Overdrive Clark

I'm new to the board and I hope I'm doing it right
I daily operate a 1954 F800 dump truck last year
the rear end was replaced with a F900 Eaton 2 speed,
(bigger brakes) I run a 391SD 5 speed Clark. Flat
out to the governor 3200RPMs is about 50MPH. The rear
end is a beauty but I lost my top end. Somebody out
there has to have a Clark 5 speed overdrive for sale?
This is no restored truck, it just has been kept up,we
bought it in 1957 I have been driving it atleast 40
years and has been a company icon. I'll post a picture
when I figure how to do it.
My email is sampine@attbi.com
Thanks Sam

I would assume (?) that the 391 is a later model engine? You don't need to stay with a Clark trans. Any medium-duty truck trans should work. If you go to a truck stop, they will have a truck sales magazine called "Truck Paper". These are printed up by region, and are free. There will be listings in there for parts dealers in your area. The internet is a good place to look, also. Just do a Yahoo (or other search engine) search for trucks or truck parts, and you will find sites like Erickson's Trucks and parts, etc, that can help you out. You should be able to upgrade to a newer 6 or 7 speed trans for under $1000.00, plus you should be able to sell your trans for $3-500.00. Let me know if you need any help. Medium duty trucks have become my thing over the last few years.

I have a 1955 5-speed transmission FOR SALE but I am not sure if it is a 'Clark" or "New Process". Had a 254, BIG 6 "M" engine in front of it.

FOR SALE: floor-shifted, 5-speed transmission with emergency brake on the rear, eng-to-tranny plate, bell housing, flywheel, pressure plate*, clutch disc*, throwout bearing*, etc

* used; needs replaced

FOR SALE, best offer; ship from Memphis, Tn; I'll tie all needed parts on a pallet and deliver to the trucking company free; buyer prepays for shipping

I have photos in case anyone can identify it from photos. pls call or PM

Please help me identify it from the photos

The only ID I see on the top loader plate is:

C-90102
1-7-55

Thanks,

John

Wink 5-speed Clark vs. 5-speed New Process FOR SALE

I have a 5-speed transmission that was mated to a 254 "M" engine, the BIG 6 Ford Flathead engine, and it is FOR SALE, $995, OBO.

My location is Memphis, Tn 38138

I have photos that I could email to someone in case you might be so kind as to help identify this transmission.

The only ID I see on the top plate is:

C-90102 (the C may represent "Clark", right?)
1-7-55

If you wish to telephone me I'd appreciate it and I can give you my e-mail address. Or you might PM me but I don't check the PM very often.

Thanks, for any help

John

You might want to look for a Brownie box, pretty common in old grain trucks/etc...usually buy the whole truck for less than what it'd cost you to find the box.

Brownie box would probably be your best bet. With a brownie you can use your lower gears for heavy hauling and use your overdrive for empty highway use. Best of both worlds

Howdy,

There was a time when I was trying to find a Clark 5 speed.

They are pretty scarce. I called several transmission shops shops that serviced medium duty transmissions and they all told me that those old transmissions would be hard to find and if I found one some parts might not be available it it needed rebuilding.

I wanted one with the overdrive 5 th gear and they said that the 5th gear parts were the hardest to find.

I bagged the whole idea and went with an automatic!

Pics in my gallery.

Cheers,

Rick

Rick,

I am wondering :

1) if the Clark 5-spd overdrive tranny (250-VO) had the overdrive unit attached as an integral part of the trans,

AND

2) it had a single speed differential (not a 2-speed differential)?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

ALSO, I am wondering if the Clark 5-spd DIRECT DRIVE trans (250-V) had a 2-spd differential (low & high gears)?

your/ALL feed back appreciated

Hi JW,

I seem to remember seeing a picture. The OD "unit" is really not a unit at all. It's just an additional gear that's less than 1:1. 0.8 or 0.85 to one I think.

The 250VO can be used in any vehicle, 2 speed axle or no.

The trans guys I spoke to told me that there are a few parts for the 250VO that are just not available anymore. There may be other Clark transmissions that will bolt to the same bell housing though like the 280. I think they have an overdrive version as well.

Just about all of the trans guys I spoke to didn't seem very interested in even talking about them since it was clear that I wasn't going to buy anything from them.

If you do a little google search for Clark 250VO or 280VO you get all kind of "stuff"!

Cheers,

Rick

JW

the 5th overdrive transmission has overdrive built into 5th gear and has nothing to do with the rear axle

a two speed or single speed rear can be used with an overdrive or direct transmission, one has nothing nothing to do with the other

there are several clark 5 speed overdrive the 280 and 285 seemed to be most popular
