I have an older western Proplow off my old truck. It is a uni-mount. I know western dose not make this this mount anymore but I hate tonot use this plow. It's in great shape. My western dealer told me it would be just as expansive to make this older plow fit a new mount as it would to just buy an entire new plow. Has anyone else converted there uni-mount plow to the ulta mount? Is my dealer just tring to sell plows or what? Any and all advice would be great. Thanks.
Uni-mount and ultra-mount are not interchangeable...I went through the same thing as you are. I bought an 8' Arctic poly plow for my new truck. Western make great units, but they're big $$$. Have had no problems with the new setup so far.
What year truck are you trying to put the mount on? I bought a Western plow (used) last fall, it was a complete uni mount set up off of a 2003 truck. I bought a mount from ebay for my 94 and hooked everything up. The mount for the 03 sits in the barn ready for the upgrade to the new body style.
I am also dealing with the same issue with my Fisher Minute Mount plow that came off my 95 and I'm trying to put it on the 05 F-350 I just bought. Seems the truck bracket and wiring harness will run me around $850. The dealers that I have talked with also said I'd be ahead just to sell my old unit and get a new plow. Go figure....
Just checked all my sources in my area, they do not make a uni mount for the 05 and newer trucks. You have to go to the new ultra mount set up. I haven't paid that much attention, do the new front bumpers bolt on the same as they did in 04? If so you should be able to modify a mount from one of those and use your existing plow. The more I think about the plow that I have and how much easier the new ones are to hook up, I will probably sell the plow on the truck and put a new one on the next truck. Maybe I should think about selling the 03 mount that I have before it becomes a dinosaur.
Just got off the phone with my western dealer. They make an adapter kit to attach a unimount plow to the ultra mount on the truck. They said I would also have to change the wiring on the plow to the new style. Ok so that don't seem that bad. So can you tell me why they quoted me $2600.00 to do the conversion and to put the mount on my truck. seems a little high don't you think so?
I would say 2600.00 is just plain crazy. The wiring harness I hear are like 150.00 and the adapter bracket kits are like 800.00. So they must have the highest shop rate on the planet. I did a similar swap and couldnt see buying a new plow at over 4000.00 installed, when the one I had is in mint condition and serviced regularly. They just want to sell new plows and have easy installs. IMO My cost to swap with new brackets and labor 350.00 + tax.
We have both the uni and ultra mount systems at work and if it were me I would spend the extra cash just for the ease of hooking and unhooking. There is no comparison.
Why not make the mount?
I made one for my last truck ('91 Bronco) from a '70's era Meyer lift frame. I already had a front receiver, and just modified it to mount the lift frame.
I did the same thing when I got this '06 F250- bought a front receiver (needed it for the multi-mount anyway), and added 2 pieces of 2 1/2" square tube to accept the lift frame mount.
I made frame mounts to attach the plow A frame, hooked everything up, and plowed some dirt to check it out before the snow flies.
If anyone is interested, let me know. I'll email you photos of it.
