A/C update

I was told that this was the best place to ask for ideas. I have a 79 F-150, 300 inch six, auto trans. The A/C compressor is a goner, but who can blame it. I was thinking this would be a good time to update the sytem. What all do I need to change, and what compressor would be a good choice? I believe the A/C was a dealer option. I was there when the truck was bought by my father in law, but that was a long time ago.

300 six, auto, very basic truck

Has the system been open for any length of time? If it hasn't I would have it purged and install a new compressor. If you plan to update it to R134, you will need to do more work and realize that the system may not cool as great as it did with R12.

Thanks. I will take a look at replacing just the compressor. Can I get the system charged with the old fashioned freon? The old compressor is still in place, so I do not think any crud has made it's way inside, unless the old compressor has blown debris into the rest of the system.

If your compressor grenaded, the rest of the system needs to be cleaned or replaced...

Early Ford compressors were notorious for "black death".

I am new to this forum thing and not that good with computers, however I think that I can add some input. If you do decide to retro your system, the moderator is correct in that its alot of work and it may not cool as well. however, I can't offer advice to the amount of work that it takes, but you can greatly increase your systems preformance by adding in a suction line heat exchanger. this will make up for your rise in head pressure and cool the liquid evap charge down.
