I was wondering how to get the pulleys off the front of my engine? I turn the 4 bolts, and the whole pulley turns. As you can tell, this is my first attempt at working on an engine and I'm still learning my way around it.
Are you talking about the water pump pulley or the crankshaft? Or both? Either way, you need to lock it from turning. On the water pump I generally use a long screwdriver or small prybar wedged in between two bolt heads, or the fan clutch shaft, anything that I can get some leverage on to hold it with one hand so I can break the bolts loose.
With the crank pulley bolts, there's often enough friction in the engine to hold it from turning if you give sort of a quick yank on the wrench to break the bolt free before it start to move the mass of the crankshaft/etc. But carefilly as you don't want to snap the bolt off.
Here's another little tip: Put the wrench handle across the center of the pulley as you break the bolt loose, it applies less leverage to the crank so that it doesn't move as easily, but still full leverage to the bolt. (See attachment below)
In extreme situations I've clamped ViseGrips onto the pulley to hold it as long as there's something solid for the handle of the ViseGrips to wedge against as the engine turns, and then it locks the engine so it can't turn, but this method can result in damage to the pulley.

Another way to do this is to cut a piece of serpentine belt, wrap it around the crank pulley, and clamp both ends of the belt tight on the pulley with the vice grips. This should give you enough leverage to break the bolts loose without damaging the pulley.
