Hey guys....do I need this Weird Item?
This is on a 2WD F250 (Excursion).
I was in search of the solution to my "Death Wobble" problem and found a problem joint at the sector shaft arm to steering drag link.
I replaced the steering drag link with a new Moog unit, which appears to be identical except has a taper where this Weird Item attached to it.
Now the Weird Item can't really clamp down to the drag link like it originally did.
The Weird Item has an arm that is supposed to engage the adjusting sleeve at the passenger side tie-rod end.
I suppose this is a safety item for keeping the adjusting sleeve from turning. However the drivers side adjusting sleeve doesn't have one.
So why would Moog have designed a replacement that didn't match the original?
Anybody know what I should do here?
Joe
Ya know, I wonder if that's under my truck too? Nice job adding the lables in the pics... Either way, I wouldn't trash that, instead I would put it on the "reduced area" and shim up that clamp holding the "weird item". Go back to the parts counter and see if there is a new "weird item" that replaces the one you have and fits your new and revised link...
that is to keep your adjustmet sleeve from turning if it happens to come loose! i'd keep it on there, hahaha! it's suposed to have the long slim part under one side of the adjustment sleve. if you take your 2nd pic where it says "the wierd ITEM", the slim part of that "wierd thing" would go right above the word ITEM!! it's ment to fit inbetween the adjustment clamp ends. you can mount them on either side from what i've seen!
if it wasn't already dark i'd go take a pic of mine, but i'm sure somone will ump in with one! if not i'll grab one tomorow!
Yeah when the Weird Item is in it's original place, the "arm" will engage the adjusting sleeve, but on the new drag link, that puts the clamp part where the reduced area is.
I think I will go back and see if there is a new Weird Item that should go with the new drag link. Otherwise I may try and take up the space with a tube I can split or some other means.
it looks like it should. the tie rod apears to be thicker. but maybe it's just the angle of the pic. but it's worth a shot! let us know how it turns out!

....more than worth a shot! It worked!
Good thinking out of the box.....appreciate it!!!
I really don't see that adjustment sleeve ever "coming" loose, but never hurts to have it there just in case!
I had a Ford dealer mechanic tell me i could just toss it, but obviously somebody at Ford thought it was worth manufacturing and including on our trucks.
Thanks again Jason!
The sleeve on my '74 highboy was in almost the exact same spot. And before I got it from my brother, he had to tighten the darn thing like everytime he off-roaded.
Wish it had that tab on it like the SD's do
I changed a bunch of stuff on the front end (both tie-rods and the sleeve) and it never came loose again.
Rep points for Jason! Click the scales on the right side of his posts, and give him some more! I already did
Thanks guys! i apreciate it. the favor was greatly returned!
KREWAT - the adjustment sleve on my race truck used to come loose after about 3-4 passes down the track. it didn't have that cool safety tab obviously (on a DANA44), so i got a couple longer bolts and i double "lock" nutted that darn thing and now i don't have to worry about it any more. i did the string alignment quite a bit till i double nutted it! not that it needed it to bad for race but it would make alittle difference if the tires where WAY off!
