oem tach install

I have a 86 F250 w/351w 4bbl and no tach. I just acquired a 86 cluster with the tach option and would like to know if when I install it will it just begin working or do I need to run new wire to the connector. If wire must be run how does Ford wire the oem tach's? I have not yet got to Alldata for the wiring schematic but that will be next if needed. Sure would be great if this was a plug and play deal.
Please E-mail me if this is an involved project.

Thanks
Daniel

i dont know if it is going to work when you put it on, but i do know the wire for the tach should be green and it will be on the postive side of your coil. the green wire from the coil should go straight to your Ignition Module/Control Unit then there should be a branch off where then the green wire goes to the tach. hope you find this helpful

If you've got an oil pressure and charge indicator on your current instrument panel you won't have to do anything but plug the new panel in. If you have idiot lights you will need to change plugs on the wiring harness and rewire the alternator/battery/regulator circuit as well as install a oil pressure sending unit and run a wire to the coil. I did the conversion on a '83. It's not terribly difficult, but you have to know what you're doing.

If you have Ammeter and oil guages already, the tach is a plug and play deal.

Really simple, just swap clusters.

Cluster swapped!!

Thanks for all the input. I swapped the "gauge" clusters and all works great. One little snafu however. My truck is an 86 and the cluster that I obtained was 80-83ish - the right turn indicator lamp and the Brake indicator displays are swapped in position. The printed circuit is different only in this respect. Easily solved with an exacto knife I cut loose the plastic lenses switched them and glued in place. Not a bad deal for a $20.00 cluster.
