Unless they have been done regularly, it can cause more trouble than it's worth. However, 5 years old you could get away with out much trouble if the motor is in good shape.
Here's the kicker. You will find a lot of snake oil in your parts store. If you want a good job, you should look around for a motorvac rep or get a can of sea foam. those are the only two products I have heard had repetitive success.
