Instrument Cluster not working after replacing lights
I replaced some burned out lights in my instrument cluster (1999.5 PSD F 250 4x4) and now my fuel guage reads full all the time. All of the other guages read correctly.
Is there a torqe setting for the 5 retaining screws that hold the rear assembly (lights, circuitry) to the front assembly (guages, some wiring)? Is it possible I torqued the two units together too tight and I'm causing a ground, or similiar? If I apply pressure from my hand to the cluster plastic cover, the guage reads accurately, but when I remove my hand it goes back to reading full. On a side note, the guage cluster is brighter than ever!
When I swaped some lights around, I just unbolted the cluster from the dash. The back cover just looked like clips, so I am not sure what you tightened. I have had my dash out several times, and have not had a similar problem.
I would suggest backing all of the screws off until just loose, then tighten them all 1/2 turn. Plug it in, if all the guages work, take it back out and give them all another 1/2 turn.
ReAx -- I loosened up the 5 screws that hold the front of the display to the back of the instrument cluster assembly. Re-installed the wire harnesses and it worked. I don't know if the screws were too tight causing a short in the circuitry (plastic sheet with what appears to be conductive ink) or if something else caused the short. Either way it works. thanks!
