trucks being bad!

Having to jump start it every morning and when cranking the check engine light comes on. Tach reads the rpm, CPS is ok. I changed my oil the day before yesterday, put some 10-w30 diesel rated in it. My batteries are 13 months old. I plug the truck in in the morning for 3 or more hours, I have 2 block heaters. I noticed when I pull the filter out, let it drain into the bowl and put it back in, the diesel overflows when I tighten it down...but pulling it usually helps it fire up. My fuel filter is 11 months old, along with my GP's. I never had this problem last winter, I forgot to plug it in one night and it fired up in -30c. Its -20c here now. Im going to clean my batt terminals and get a new fuel filter to see if that helps at all...but any input would be appreciated so once Im done those things I might have something else to check if the problem persists. Thanks
Al

typical winter fussiness I know..one thing I forgot to mention is the ammeter shows about 15-16 volts once its running a couple minutes after starting it, the needle is a little higher that it was in the summer. Isnt it bad also if it shows too much charge? or am I being stupid?
BTW...got it started, didnt remove the filter this time...just let it sit on the jumpers longer. I need a pan heater too I thing, get that oil nice n warm.

Undercharging or overcharging can be a sign of an alternator problem.

You might want to perform a no-load test and a load-test. If those turn out ok, you might want to have the alternator bench-tested.

Might want to take a look at batt cable and connections. Checking voltage at various points with a voltmeter while someone else cranks over might identify a spot where the voltage really drops off and help find a bad connection or cable.

Just my .02 cents, in those temps are you using a winter fuel additive? You may have gel/ice problems. Drain the fuel filter housing once you have it running and good and warm, this will drain any collected water in the housing. As stated above I would have the batteries & alternator & started load tested. 13 month old batteries can still go bad. If it is no spinning over fast enough it will have a hard time firing, (not building enough oil pressure in the HPOP system to fire the injectors). Check and make sure your HPOP reservoir is not draining down on you (this will also require alot of cranking to refill the reservoir before the HPOP system can build up pressure).

my bro in law works at a shop so i'll pop in tomorrow to get the alt tests done. How do I check the HPOP resevoir? After I get it running, shut it off, and go to start it again it will fire right away but wont 'catch', it will fire 2 or 3 times before running. I have some fuel additives in there now. Last winter in -25 to -35c I didnt run any additives and ran on machine diesel and had zip for issues.

For the fuel to gel up enough to not flow well, how thick will it be? I ask because when I pulled the filter to drain it those couple times the diesel in there was still just as it wouldve been in the summer. I could tell when I put the filter back in slowly, I watched the fuel to see how high over the bowl it went before running out. It barely reached the top of the housing before it spilled over, a higher viscosity liquid would rise over the lip more vefore it ran out right?

Ive got the new filter now, Im going to go put it in and clean all my terminals while its still warm under the hood (no shop).

Pud, it's just my opinon, but 11 months on a fuel filter is a little long. I change mine every other oil change. 10K miles. As far as the over charge, I think since the gp's are staying on longer and so the alt has to charge more after the cycle is over. But if the batts are low, they will show their ugly side this time of year.

thanks RD, I never got to put my new fuel filter in. Company showed up after I posted. Tomorow morning Ill pop it in there before I go to fire it up and see how she does.
I just remembered, last winter I had a smart charge battery charger Id stick on over night...which is why it cranked so well the next morning.

Remove the engine cover. On the top left (driver's side) of the HPOP reservoir, there is a pipe plug with a 1/4 in. square hole in it. Remove the plug, look inside, the oil should be within 1/2 in. of the top. If you cannot get the pipe plug out, (some say they cannot) then on the top right side of the HPOP reservoir is your oil pressure sending unit. Unplug the sender, then unscrew it from the reservoir.
