Just noticed that the lane change feature [where you can make the turn signal flash without fully engaging it past the click for the turn signal] was not working on one side [the right], on the left you push down on the stalk slightly and the blinker engages, but on the right, only if you push it all the way up to activate the turn signal itself. I assume this indicates a problem with the multifunction [multi-function] switch. Don't think I'll replace it for just one minor flaw like this but if anyone has encountered this before and has any remedy tips it is appreciated. Be nice if there was just some contact I could clean but I doubt it.
Otherwise if I decide to r/r the switch I'd appreciate any tips. I wonder if it is on the way out. My Haynes manual says I need to remove the steering wheel to pull off the top and bottom shrounds for the column and I don't think that's right. It appears to be more of a matter of removing a few screws. Anyone who has done it on a 97 or similar with advice please pass it on. Thanks.
It's not at all difficult to replace. You remove the three or four screws underneath the steering column and remove the lower cover.
Then turn the key to the unlocked position, press the release button up from under the ignition assembly and remove the entire tumbler assembly, key and all.
Then remove the upper cover.
Then remove the two screws that hold the multifunction switch in place (torx T30 I believe), remove the switch, and carefully unplug the connectors... it goes back on just as easily.
The hardest part of the entire job actually is getting the two column covers positioned back in place correctly... if they aren't perfect, they won't snap in place properly and can rub the steering wheel when you turn.
I've done so many I can do them in about five minutes....
Appreciate the help. Of course yesterday I checked the lane change function on both sides and both worked. It was much warmer than when it didn't work so perhaps it is a cold weather thing. I'll check it again when it gets colder and keep an eye on it.
