Need electrical help

Hooking up a relay in my 2006 SD diesel to power a DC-AC inverter. I have used a heavy duty plow control relay to supply the DC and now need to find a circuit that I can tap into that will ground or supply 12VDC to the relay control when the motor is on. I will hardwire a ground or 12VDC to the other pole. Either way, I don't want to add a manual switch, as I will forget to turn it off. Please don't tell me the ingition run circuit or similar - I am looking for specific wire color and where to find it under the hood.

Thanks, Rich

Just a thought, but you could probably use the tach signal wire that sits unused in the same bundle of wires by the parking brake release where the 4 pass-through wires are. The tach wire should have enough juice to power a Bosch style relay and would have juice when the truck's running. With the relay, it would be you're choice whether to make the outputs of the relay + or -. I believe the tach wire is Lt. Green/White. But as always, test the wire.

I thought tach signal pulses, not constant voltage

your right jello. The tach wire isn't suitable for that purpose. There is a white wire with blue stripe. It sit on top of the diagnostic connector under the dash, roughly over the gas pedel. It comes with nothing connected to it. It's for customer use as accessory power.

Radio Ground black and black/lt. green - radio harness
Radio Ignition pink + radio harness
Radio Illumination lt. blue/red (dimmer) + radio harness

The only thing I can think of will be the fuel pump wiring. It will turn on for a few seconds when the key is on, but if the motor is not running will shut back off.

If it has upfitter switches why not use one of them. 2 of them use 30 amp relays and 2 use 10 amp relays.

Thanks for the ideas. I will check for those wires in the AM to see what I can find. I do have the upfitter switches, but I use those for other things, and don't think that I need a manual override, although I will have to ponder that a bit more.

I looked a little further and your truck should have a 10 amp (location 29)fused wire in the customer access wiring. White with a light blue stripe. They put tags on them with what they are.

Rich- Maybe I'm not understanding exactly what you're asking. Do you want a ignition/accessory switched circuit (a circuit that only has power when the ignition is turned to "ON" and "ACC")? Or a circuit that has power only when the motor is running?

Admittedly, when I first posted, it didn't matter. In retrospect, however, since the inverter will potentially draw a fairly large load, I believe that it should be on only when the motor is running.

Thanks for the wiring tips. I just finished installing my airhorn and wanted an ignition accessory wire, in case there is some leak or something, the compressor won't run all night. Now it can only go on with the engine running.

Oops! I meant to respond to this. As I alluded to in my first post, finding a wire that's only active when the truck is actually running (as opposed to just having the key in the "ON" position) is not an easy thing. What I did fail to remember is that the tach wire is more than likely AC not DC. So I'm pretty much back to scratching my head.

It would be a pulse, but this is not a problem. A small capacitor, a couple of diodes, and a resistor, wired in with the relay would've taken care of that.

Ended up using the white/blue wire under the dash so unit only runs when ignition is on. Decided that that is close enough verses running when the motor is running, since I don't generally leave the ignition on without truck running anyway.

Thanks again for all the advise.
