Alright folks after years of asking around and living in different neighborhoods I still feel I need to ask
WHEN IS IT OK TO PUT UP CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS???
Now please keep in mind I am ONLY talking residentially because we all know that commercially (Stores, Malls, whatever) the Christmas season starts on July 5th.
My inlaws live in one of those neighborhoods where decorating is a very big deal and has been for about 15 years. People all over San Diego County have heard of and travel to their neighborhood. Traditionally they, as a neighborhood, have all put their lights up the day after Thanksgiving. That seems to be an exceptable lead time for Christmas.
In my neighborhood I saw the first set of Christmas lights go up on November 1st and that just seems a might DAMN RIDICULOUS! Now I am not talking about that strand of big bulb lights that someone leaves up all year long and calls "Party Lights" I am talking full blown decorations.
Me personally I try and get mine up between the last week of November and the first week of December, as time permits.
What do you guys think? When is it ok to flip the switch?
As you have mentioned, by tradition it is the day after Thanksgiving. But people are moving the day around to suit themselves. We have about 4 neighbors that put their lights on Nov. 1. ...
My wife and I like Dec 1. It just feels better that day to put up lights( we do not do much of that anymore) plus, we dont tire of the yule tide season way before it gets here .
The weekend after Thanksgiving for me...it's convenient since the holiday is there anyways. I don't light them until about December 5th though.
Same for me too. I'll probably get to it tomorrow. I've had the same scrawny, pitiful-*** tree since 1993 and I love the little fella. Takes me all of five minutes to unbag it, glue the star back on, and light the sucker up! I hose it off every five years and there's no putting together/taking apart...
I always put up mine when the wife decides shes going to do it all, I sorta just watch and remind her to be careful and not fall off the ladder or the stairs getting the boxes of stuff from the attic.
My mother's birthday is Dec. 6th (she died in 1989), so just to keep ourselves in check, I've always told the wife that nothing gets started until after that date. Since nothing comes down until after Jan. 1st, that's 3 full weeks plus, and that's enough. Joelski--you'd definitely win the 'Charlie Brown Tree Award' if this site had one!
