mpg while towing 2700 lbs

hey everyone. I have a couple of ????. First off i dont tow that much, some but not a lot. So my question is. How much is mpg affected by towing 2500-2700 lbs total weight cargo and me and my two buddies. The cargo i speak of is a 2 place trailer with 2 atvs on it and one in the truck and our gear. I must add it was quite windy in New England today. I think i went 110 miles today and used 3/4s of a tank. Although it was the last 3/4s of the tank. And the truck is a 95 lb,sc,351 and a 4x4. aka big red. Just seems to have used a lot of fuel to me. Any help would be great...
thanks

Too many variable to give you an accurate answer.

New England, so hills?

How fast?

Were you headed into the wind?

Rear axle ratio?

Fuel tank size? (Actual number of gallons would be better).

Etc., etc., etc.

I used my 94 F250 5.8 auto 3.55 gear to tow a trailer with my 86 F150 on it from southern Georgia to west Tennessee and averaged about 12 mpg. Normally, my best on the highway with it empty is 15. If you run into a headwind, that's just extra work for the engine to do.
Your mileage sounds a little on the low side; so info about gearing, tires, terrain and such would be more helpful. Also let us know about what you get under normal conditions for mileage.

hey, Sorry for the lack of info. I should have thought of those things. So here it is. the gears are 3.73 with 31 inch tires and i was heading fror the cape so there werent many hills. And i was using the front tank so i guess about 10 gallons. and we went about 110 miles round trip. and we did no more than 70 mph. also i stated we used 3/4s of a tank but we really only used a 1/2

So you are saying 5-6 gallons in 110 miles towing?

Gas gauges are almost universally inaccurate and supposedly they are "geared" to take a long time to go from full to half, and then drop like a rock. Supposedly this is to make you think you are getting better gas mileage since the gauge hardly moves before most of us refill.

The only way to get a reasonable estimate is to run a full tank and try to refill to the same level(not as easy as you think).
That plus all the other variables could give us wildly different mileages.

For example , my 94 F250 4WD super cab Longbed, E4OD, 4.10 almost always gets about 10-12 mpg (on a good day) with no load at 60 to 65mph. When I tow I get maybe 8-9. This past weekend I got better than 12 while travelling on average 75-80+mph thru a lot of hills etc.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
