4x4 Wheel Bearings

How does one determine that the front wheel bearings are going bad? The reason I ask this questions is because my 4x4 u joints on the front wheel moves up and down a little not in and out so, I was thinking that the wheel bearing could be going bad. I have noticed the right front wheel seems to wear more. On the cars I used to work on the wheel bearings always had a roar to them.

jack the front up and see if the wheel has any play in it. if not pull your hub off and check to see if the snap ring has come off the axle.

Best way to check this is when its time to change the ball joints. I used the procedure in the fourms here and it worked great.
