Can my Expedition safely tow this trailer?
#16
i used to tow a 28' pace shadow with my f350 (9900# rated). my '06 expedition limited is rated at 8900#. the trailer itself weighed about 3500 empty, but when you add shelves, tire racks, cabinets, etc. the weight climbs rapidly. i hauled a 1200# sports racer, golf cart, spares, etc. and the total weight of the loaded trailer was about 9500#. if this trailer you're looking at weighs in around 3800, and i suspect the car is pushing 3200#, you may want to do a close check on the remining gear you'll haul around, as well as the rating on your truck. i remember going through a couple of transmissions in an earlier truck i owned.

What is the axle ratio on your Expy?? If it is 3.55 forget it.
I'm with BP - this is pushing the limits of the Expy and the wheelbase isn't much help.
You will definatley need a weight distribution hitch with built in sway control. DO NOT SKIP THE SWAY CONTROL.
30 feet of "sail area" can be brutal with cross winds and passing trucks.
If you do buy this trailer after getting it (and your TBird) weight and it's not too heavy, I would recommend an Equal-i-zer brand hitch and a Prodigy brake controller. You can get them both with free shipping from www.rvwholesalers.com
How many miles to you plan to travel with this car hauler. General rule of thumb for RVer's is 80% of towing capacity for long term survival of the tow vehicle.

I've towed a travel trailer 1000's 0f miles with an expy eb . The weight is about 7300lbs. loaded. The horsepower is not the limiting factor. The tranny is. Keep it as cool as possible with the addition of a tran. cooler and change the fluid every year if you do a lot of towing. The other thing you MUST do is to use a weight distributing hitch with anti-sway bars and of course you'll need extended mirrors. Keep the speed at 60mph and you'll be fine. Check the manufacturer's web site to verify "dry weight" of the trailer, not the GVWR which simply tells you the axle's upper limits. The GVWR has to be posted on a specs plate on the trailer somewhere, by law. Towing can be fun but it is serious business; do not cheap-out on the safety requirements or you (and others) may be sorry.
