My truck's about ready to have the tie rods replaced. I was gunna do the drag link too while I'm in there. Is there anything I should be concerned about? Any special tools I need like a puller?? The truck is an 84 F150 4wd. Also, how should I go about alignment? Should I just put the new parts in with the same amount of exposed threading as the originals, then take it to a shop, or can a do the myself?? Much appreciated guys.
I just did the tie rod ends on the Bronco. You'll need a hammer, the bigger the better, and a possibly a pickle fork for the one on the pitman arm. You won't need a puller. I had play in three of them, I just did them all at once. I spent $80 or so for Spicer parts from rockauto.com - the shop quoted me $700 or so to change them. Quite a savings!
You'll definitely need an alignment afterwards. I suggest firestone, because they offer a lifetime alignment for $180, and you get it aligned for free after that - as many times as my truck has needed an alignment, it was well worth the money.
Just wondering what you think about your tie rod ends. I checked out rockauto as well and the spicers are really well priced. Did you go with the red label service grade or the professional grade? Thinking about doing all 4 at once.
