won't crank

went to start the truck this morning and the batteries died on one cycle,,tryed to jump start and just clicks in the selenoid on the firewall,,can hear the glow plug controller cycle,,cleaned both set of battery terminals and took the wires off the selenoid and cleaned the ends of them as well,,,topped batteries off with water,,put the charger on it for about 2 hrs and still nothing but a click in the selenoid.

When I try to start it the lights are not dying out,,everything is staying powered up,,I tried the screwdriver crossover on the selenoid and had very little spark and nothing happened.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

This is the first time I have ever had a problem with the truck starting.

did you check your connections at the starter? the solenoid your are refering to, is it the one on the ps fender well or the one on starter ? there is a large solenoid on the starter. the starter should have 3 connections. a large red wire comming straight from the battery (i call this the primary power), a smaller (usually black) wire coming from the fender well solenoid (i call this the control), and a very short, heavy, (sometimes braided) cable/wire going from the solenoid on the starter to the starter motor itself (i call this the secondary power).

if any of these 3 are loose or bad, your starter won't turn over. also if you have a helper, have someone try to start your truck while you watch these connections. the secondary may feel tight and look good but i have seen it "glow red" during starting.

good luck

also try turning engine over by hand sounds like starter is hung up in flywheel if so get ready to get a starter or take starter off and go to autozone or checkers and have checked they are supposed to draw a min of 100 amps to start off i bought a new one about a year ago and had to replace about 8 months later thank goodness for checker and the lifetime war on the starter not only are theya bear to get off but expensive to

hope this helps

I just replaced mine recently, O'Reilly's Auto Parts, $135, LLT warranty. Be aware, for a 7.3l there are 3 different types, all are supposed to be interchangeable. When I was there they had 2 different ones. I got the one that was the same as mine. And the top bolt can be a little tricky.

the best one on the market is the missab gear reduction they have enough torque to thro the motor out of the truck if not tied in good well maybe not that much but they are a real good starter

If you were like me, I was shocked as to how much "power" a new starter had.

Did you make any checks at the starter connections before you changed it ?

the wire going from the starter solenoid to the starter was fried,,,just dropped there and replaced the whole starter.
Was alot easier to do than I thought it was gonna be,,took me a couple minutes to figure out how to get that top bolt out but once I did it was over and done!!!

thanks again!!
