I have a '01 f-250 that starts hard when it is cold. When I go to start it, when it might only be 31 degrees out it revs up and down alot before it comes to an idle. Sometimes it will go through this and die three four times bfore it will idle smooth. I took it to Ford and they said it was my glow plug relay and replaced it. Same symptoms, I havent called them back cause there closed today. Anybody got any ideas or had this exp. I want to be able to trust it to start when I need it to. Thanks for any help!
Hmmm, sounds like the Exhaust bypass valve or components thereof trying to do their thing but having a bit of difficulty. Does it make a whooshing or jet engine sound when this idling/dieing thing goes on?
I guess I cant say that it makes any real sounds like that but I dont have a muffler on it so it sounds a little like that anyway. When it does idle and the idle goes on fast idle than it sounds like a jet engine out the tailpipe. Are there any ways to check this stuff myself?
You can disable it to see if the idle situation stabilizes. The valve may be sticking causing the truck to hunt between the on and off idle values.
That fast idle jet sound is the EBV coming on and working. It should kick off and idle down with a simple tap on the brake pedal. If so, it is functioning but may have a clogged tube or other issue.
The fast idle kicks of like it should. Otherwise the trucks runs great. No problems other than when it first starts on a cold morning. Once it idles the truck is fine. Just getting it to come to that first idle is the only symptom I have. How would I disable it? If I do that, the truck should start ok if that is the problem?
I've not had to do this so don't want to give advise that could be wrong. There are plenty here who have and should chime in to give you the poop. Since I don't recall the specifics, I would await their info. It does sound as if it is working though. I know Kwikk can tell ya. Do a search while you wait.
Sounds like your truck has the romps.
What the cure is, I think Amiller93 posted a TSB about it.
I cannot remember what it said, but I do remember that it was something sort of obscure.
Well he didn't say romp romp. I think that may be it if that is what it is doing but he wouldn't hear the jet sound through that. If that is it, may want to check the GPR, GPs. First order of biz though is make sure the batteries are up to speed. Have them load tested. It is free.
Then it gets intricate, all the way down to even a possible bad throttle position switch and idle validation switch even, but I don't think this is his prob. His does sound like the romps.
Join the club dude........... Mine's been doing it since the cold weather came and stayed. I've just about pulled my hair out too.......
But, I'll tell ya this much. There are guys on here will help ya get it squared away. Alan gave me a bunch of stuff to check out. I plan to get after it tomorrow and post up the results.
Well mine had a few occasions of minimal romp romp last year during the coldest days of the winter. This year it did it way before it got cold enough, had my batteries tested and they both failed. New Wally units at $62 a piece and it is all good. Get the batteries tested first. It is free. Don't try charging/reconditioning, I have a state of the art unit and it did not fail the batteries but they were done. If that does not do it, then move on to the GP system.
