i read the article that john wrote about installing a gm column on his f100. he used a column from an '86 deville. i have a '54, with volare suspension. i recently got a tilt column from an '88 deville. i hope this is the same thing. does anyone know if i will follow the same procedures?
This mod is on the list for the near future. One problem that I have come up with is the shifter. I'm going with a toploader, so I don't need the column shifter (nor want to look at it!) Does anybody know if there is a "column cover" available, maybe in aluminum? I guess I'm looking for the same look as the flaming river column, but alot cheaper. Anybody deal with this yet?
I used a tilt column from a Mid-70's Camaro as it had a floor shifter. I chose it because it is steel all the way down to the floor. It looks like it belongs in a 50 year old truck.
IMHO one of the advantages of using an earlier model gm columns (70's) vs later (80's) is the placement of the high beam switch (not the lever). on the later models you have this big nasty switch about half way down the column on the left hand side. on the earlier models that switch is located up by the turn signal lever.
i would like to know how some of you more experienced builders out there hide this ugly wart. i'm actually considering looking for an earlier model gm column to avoid having to deal hiding or covering up the high beam switch.
