I think I need to replace my altenator or get it off to have it checked for that matter. My question is how do you get the serpintine belt off so I can unbolt the alternator??? Is there a tensioner? If there is I havent been able to spot it. Its a tight squeeze and I cant seem to find one. Just need a little guidence or a simple how to would be even better. I tried to search but I noticed there isnt a search icon anymore, where did it go? I appreciate the help. I have to get this issue checked out before I get left stranded some where. thanks
[QUOTE=Lonewolftx]1st you need to have 25 posts to use the current search engine. It should be up for you now.QUOTE]
Well not exactly... It changed again on 11/20/06
"Search is now turned off again for non-Club FTE members and non-staff.
We must take this step. I just came back today from 3 weeks of business trips and I'm simply too far behind to consider installing the load balancer and additional equipment. Search will be off like this at least through the end of December." -Webmaster
Yeah I cant wait until hte search engine comes back up. I looked at the picture under the hood and its a little confusing! Thanks for the info guys. Anyone else with some alternator advice?
The tensioner is on the passenger side, down low. It isnt an easy job for anyone, tech or not. I usually have someone to help me with a serpentine belt tool. You can get it from the top, it will loosen just enough to get the alt off.
Generally you can pull hard enough on the belt to pull the belt off the pulley, then keep it tight and zip tie or duct tape it to the fan shroud. Change the alternator and then pull the belt back on.
It doesn't have enough tension on it to prevent you from doing it by hand, just be careful not to let it fall off the other pulleys. I have changed several this way.
There is a small spring-loaded lever on the bottom of the tensioner that is easily reached while laying under the truck. Have a friend pull up on the belt while you push the lever up. It will hold the tensioner unloaded while you do your work.
After all new parts are in place, pull up on the belt, and the lever will spring away, putting tension back on the belt.
Oh, and if you have trouble pulling the belt, a 1/2" breaker bar will fit into the pulley of the tensioner, allowing you to lever it up.
