I am new to this site and this is my first post, and I just wanted to see what I could find out. I have a 2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4L 4x4 w/Off Road package (stock for now), and I was looking to put a programmer on my truck. I have been looking at Hypertech, Edge, & Superchips programmers. I also will be putting a K&N Generation ll 57 series FIPK air intake kit on my truck very soon. I was just wondering if anyone might be using a programmer and could let me know their first hand experience with it. If you have this set up or something simular let me know what you are getting out of it. Or if you just have any other performance related suggestions let me know.
I have the same truck (without the FIPK). I have a Diablosport Predator programmer and I am very pleased with it. I run the 93 octane setting with the shift pressure turned up. It has much better throttle response and noticable power increase and the tranny shifts quick and firm (not hard, but nice and firm). I also have a 40 series Flowmaster with 3"in and dual 2.5" outlets run out the back. It runs really well. I often tow 7000+ lbs with no problems. I also get 1.5 to 2mpg better with the 93 octane tune whick more than pays for the extra cost of 93 octane per fill-up.
I have 3.55 gears as well.
i had the edge and i say had because i sent it back. i thought that edge's customer service was horrible. i had problems with the unit and could not get help from edge. then the guy tells me "just send it in we wil have it 5-7 days and then get it back out to you." i told him that if i did that my 30 days to send this thing back would be up and at thi point it was a concern to me. he acted like he could care less so i just sent it back.
now i am looking at the sniper stuff. their stuff looks pretty good. you make up your own programs and it holds 6 programs and you can run 2 vehicles off the one programmer. well its actually computer software.
The Diablosport tuners work great on the modular motors. The trans functions are greatly improved over stock which is nice if you are carrying/towing anything heavy as well as when you just feel like flooring it. Diablo is actually on a big push right now about the increase in fuel mileage as well. As far as the sniper stuff goes the jury is still out on them. I have been waiting on demos, product guides, tech support calls etc since about 6 months before they actually launched their product. I have spoken with the owner of the company directly on more than one occasion and been assured I would have someone follow up with me directly due to my haveing a dealer status. To this day I still have not heard/received anything from them. Leads me to believe that their customer service most likely need some improvement. As far as the write your own program thing goes, as explained to me by the owner it is pretty muc a blank slate that you put your data into. If you dont know what you are doing here this is grounds for disaster for the average do-it-yourselfer.
Let me know if there is anything else I can help answer for you!
being a sct dealer i would like to suggest you look at a sct excalibrater 2 with tunes written for you and the area you live in. look into www.sctflash.com type in your zip code to find a dealer nearby your home that can work with you to help get what your looking for.
Iuse the bama chips programer, it's an sct programer with bama tunes. Boug creates the tunes specific to your trucks computer and mods if any. Doug only does fords, he's a ford computer guru. A lot of us on the ranger site use bama and it's quite impressive. It works great as a stand alone mode, or really wakes up anyother mods you may have. One of the few products that does what it says. I have 3 yune on my programer, 1) a 87 octane hp tune, 2) a 92 torque tune, and 3) a 93 hp tune. A member of this board sells bama on his online ford performance store and he's a sponser, his name is Bob Jusnes and his site is www.jusnesmodified.com, or you can check out the programers at www.bama chips.com. Dougs customer service is excellent as well. I have alot of the mods you mentioned on my 4.0 sohc ranger and it runs awesome. I recomend you try to stay away from k&n if you can, they flow great, but they filter poorly. AEM flows and filters well and you don't have to oil the filter, no chance of oil on the maf. AEM dosen't make a brute force intake for my year of ranger yet, so I have a k&n intake with the AEM filter, they may have an intake for your application, I believe they do. I know I'm a ranger guy, but just wanted to help. I did have a 99 f-150 with a modded 5.4, I used a jet generic chip and burned up my computer. I never did get my mods dialed in properly. I wish bama was around then.
