Does any one know if the oil pan on my 88 f-150 5.0 can be removed without jacking up the engine or removing the engine alltogether. Has 190000 mls and would like to clean the sludge from the pan and replace the oil pump and stop the leaks. Thanks for any help.
You must either remove the engine or jack the engine up. There is no way to pull the pan out without jacking the engine up a little. You will need to jack up the engine, place some wood blocks between the engine mounts and the engine mount brackets on the frame, unbolt the pan and reach into the pan and disconnect the oil pump from the engine, then the whole oil pump / pan will be able to be removed. Installation of the oil pump back on the engine is a pain because you will need to reach back into the pan and install the oil pump driveshaft and oil pump blind. Good luck.
If it were me, I wouldn't bother too much with completely removing the pan unless you have low oil pressure.
However, if you have a few hours to kill, go for it. If you want to replace the pan gasket, I would suggest getting the 1 piece rubber gasket.
No. The engine and tranny both have to get jacked WAY up. You may even have to remove the intake plenum to gain the necessary clearance on top. You'll also have to drop the oil pump and pickup tube into the pan once you get the pan loose, in order to get the pan out.
I am trying to replace the oil pump and screen, I have jacked up the engine and final got the old pump and screen out, I am having trouble getting the oil pump drive shaft back in place while trying to botl the pump back up. I was hoping to be able to pull the pan so I could look over the bottom side of the motor while I had the pan off. I was wondeing if I pulled the traqnmission out befor jacking the engine if the pan the would come out so I could do this
If you read the repair manual it says you have to remove the air plenum to get engine high enough. That being said you will still have to drop oil pump into pan inorder to get pan out. and put pump and pickup into pan and reinstall pump and pump drive with the pan under engine. if you remove the distributor it makes getting the pump drive back in easy. mark the distributor location on block and mark rotor location on distributor housing and timing will not become a factor. Just done this job on my 88 F250 5.8.
You can use a one piece rubber gasket if you choose to but that is what mine had and that is why I had to replace the gasket. Rubber slides out after time. Use cork and contact cement it to the block, won't slide out.
