Strange how just the other day, I recall seeing and using a search button but now I can't seem to find it. Either way, on to business.
I'm pretty anxious on installing this feature on my truck just that I am not sure what my best option is.
I know that with the Factory feature, is covered under warranty, it's two controllers in one, and all that good stuff. The bad is that it's only on for ten minutes; if you don't jump in there after ten minutes, engine shuts off which is pretty lousy but I know it's a huge risk preventer. I am not sure if an aftermarket starter would do this but I was not too happy to learn the factory one did it.
Another thing that I wasn't too happy with was that with either the factory or aftermarket starters, anyone could go in there and with something simple as a screwdriver, and turn it to the on position and on off they go. I do have the LoJack which would be extra protection but it makes me leery of doing this remote start feature on the truck.
All your questions are very good ones. They are the same questions I'd have too. I was wondering if you had any ideas on the remote starts for a diesel? Any brand names ect....??? Thanks.
I'd also rule out the after market starters for sure. You have way too much to loose by taking a chance like that! Ecspecially if its as easy to start em as you say. (screw driver)....... Good luck.
Do a search on this site for remote starters and you will find that most of them are aftermarket. Most of the aftermarket systems have alot more features than the factory systems. They feature programable running times up to 30 minutes if you want. Also there are some that allow you to take the key out while leaving it running and leaving it fully armed. So if someone gets in the alarm will sound and shut down, also if the touch the brake without the key in it shuts off. Viper and Intek Astrastart are good systems, I prefer the Intek system which provides a built in diesel start timer and has superior pager range.
I installed the Astro Start and it has the option to take the key out. It works slick. If the brake or throttle or shifter is moved, it shuts everything off, and goes into starter kill mode until the key is inserted and turned.

its a little on the expensive side but here is one to check out:
I installed a Crimestopper brand remote with full alarm system. Most of these systems are highly programmable with redundant safety features. I set mine for a 20 second delay for the glow plug circuit. Additionally, the unit has a lead that can be used as a turbo timer. Before turning off the truck, hold foot on brake, press turbo timer button 1 to 5 times for 1 to 5 minutes of run time. Remove key, set alarm, and don't worry about theft or turbo heat sinking.
Boy was I glad to see that someone else noticed the missing search feature. I've been going around and around... Had to re-join this forum (off for a while without computer access, and new e-mail), so thought I just somehow couldn't remember the search feature. Hmm, maybe I'm not developing dementia afterall.
I am interested in the remote start feature. Can anyone suggest an actual link to a reputable supplier?
AstroStarts are pretty much stock equipment up here in Alaska. There are other brands, I've tried most of them and AstroStart is second to none. Something to be said being able to be sitting in my seat at a sporting event and able to start my rig out in that parking lot. Theft is not an issue as stated above, and key can be removed to leave it running while running inot the store. AutoTrim Design is the installer up here and I believer they are a nationwide chain.
