Just curious

I just bought my 2006 F150 and was extremly surprised to find that Ford does not offer a manual tranny in anything but a 2wd 6cyl. Why on the earth would Ford do this?

My guess is that they can't sell them so they won't build them.

with the technology they put in todays A/T, you don't need the M/T anymore to tow loads.

also, the M/T lowers the max tow weight you can tow.

and lastly, the majority of the population can't drive a stick to save their lives

Well, I guess thats the case. I've wondered too though, if that tow rating is really true or if they are just assuming people don't know know to drive a stick. 250's offer a 6 speed and the tow rating on them is almost like 15000 for the 6 speed and 16000 for the automatic. I guess this is just my rant.

The same thing annoyed me when I was shopping for the truck. I love sticks, have driven them all my life and would have gotten one in this truck in a heartbeat. But has tylus said, no one likes to drive sticks anymore, it's "too much work". Everything needs to be easier for people nowadays and it's annoying as u-know-what. Even Porsche and Ferrari are getting away from true manual trannies. It's pathetic.

the clutch on the M/T cannot hold the forces like a A/T can. I've always had a stick F-150 as well, but when I started looking at performance, I realized really quick the A/T was the way to go. Especially since they started putting programable transmissions in these.

The F-250/350 still has the M/T because they are more of a "work" truck than the F-150 is. More people would rather drive the stick in them than trust a A/T with the loads they pull.

Most light trucks are driven by all members of the family and almost all families have one or more members that can't or won't drive a stick. My wife can drive a stick great and did for many years but now she refuses to do it except in an emergency. I have found a very limited market when I try to sell a stick shift and I'm sure the manufacturers do also. You can usually sell an automatic to someone who wants a stick if they like the rest of the vehicle but you can't sell a stick to someone looking for an automatic.

I hadn't really thought about it like that. I guess people are just getting lazy and not wanting to drive the stick shift. At least Ford's not gone totally away from it.
