Autolite carb.

Well life has definately been on the stressful side here lately. To the point of actually having to sell my 69. So i had it for sale here locally and also put it on ebay. Bidding went alot higher than i thought and in the end a guy from my church won the thing. He actually wrote me a check for the truck and then gave me my truck back as well. Talk about speechless. Any way theres still some good hearted folks out there. Well now that i get to keep it i need to work out some carb issues. has anybody used an old autolite 4 bbl with any success or should i get a holley. ive got an edel on it now and am not satisfied with it. thanks for the input.

I've heard that the power valve blows out on the first backfire with those Autolite's. Personally I'd go with a Holley 4160.

I run a 600 cfm Holley vaccuum secondary carb on my 390. I haven't had any problems with it at all. The new Holleys have the check valve in them that prevents blown power valves in the event of a backfire.

The worst part of the Autolite is getting the accel pump to work smooth enough, or actually work at all.

Save the headaches, get yourself a new 600 Holley, bolt it on and drive it!

What's the problem with the Edel carb?(I hate them too).

The autolite 4300 on my T-bird has a brass power valve with a rubber o-ring on the plunger. Looking at it, there's no way the power vlave could actually blow on backfire. My power valve stuck open, but that was because the o-ring went out due to age.

Only issue i've ever had with the autolite is that the secondaries like to stick open every now and then, it won't rev down and wants to try to idle at 5500 rpm.

Idle at 5500?????? I'd say that was a problem. Real hard on the motor for sure. Even the Motorcraft junk 4 barrel didn't do that.

Yeah, i pumped the gas to start it, cranked the key over and the revs just kept climbing. I shut the key off and when i got out to see what was going on the butterflies of the secondaries were stuck open about 1/2 way. A little 3 in 1 oil and it's been smooth as can be since.

I asked around to some guys that I know that messed around with tehse things and they said it's a fairly common occurance if you don't get into the secondaries every now and then. Gunk will just build up, then one day when you get into the secondaries it won't get out.

They said either drive it like a mad man every now and then or just keep the secondary linkage oiled.

Been there, done that, in downtown Omaha, Nebraska in a '65 Galaxy. I was able to get her stopped and I worked the linkage loose. After that, I kept the carb in proper working condition.
