Yep, manual to auto, auto to manual t-case / hubs / tranny will all interchange. Your 87 had auto hubs? Am I guessing that it was an auto tranny with 4.10 gears and trac-lock differentials too? The only rigs I remember having auto hubs were the 91-up Explorers and Rangers, maybe the 89-90 Rangers and BIIs. Unless that's an Eddie Bauer option? Oh, and the only thing about going from an auto transmission to manual and vice versa is the computers are different, I believe.
I'll have to run the VIN info and check the tags on the difs. I'd do that now except it's dark, REALLY cold outside and I don't have a garage. Man that would be great if I do have 4.10s and trac-lock. The truck is an XLT with 2.9L and auto trans and auto xfer/hubs. I still have the auto hubs and the pieces I tried to glue/bond/braze back together. That didn't work, so I ebayed and put some Mile-Marker man hubs on. After everything it took to get the truck streetable and safety inspected I've been afraid to even hit the auto button on the panel and try out the 4 wheel drive just yet.

You can probably get the axle code(s) off the door jamb sticker and look it up on lmctruck.com. On another note, someone had previously posted that the 7.5 and 8.8 axles had different sized brakes: Not necessarily true, as both had 9" and 10" drum models! Also, since yours is automatic, it probably has at least 3.73 gears, which probably would not have the trac-locks. I think I've only seen the trac-locks in diffs with 4.10s. I could be wrong.
Happy New Year all! Had my hopes dashed a bit. Have code 44 axles, non trak-locks and 3:73 gears. Oh well, I want to change the axles eventually, should I break these. While I'm here, I saw in a previous post or tech article about putting 96 Explorer disk brakes on a 8.8 rear axle. I assume the 95 up Explorers had wider axles along with the 5.0 motors and so won't fit without narrowing? Kernel, when you swapped in the Explorer springs on your BII did the rear sit higher than the front, hence the need to level the front? Also, if I was to swap in Exporer axles and springs at the same time would the truck sit level? Or kept the current rear and mounted the Exporer springs without swapping the spring perches? Sorry for the run on questions and thanks in advance.
Yeah, my rear sits a little higher, about 1/2-3/4" or so. Not sure if it's a matter of front shocks being too short or the need for spacers or alignment issues yet. If you swap in Explorer axles, the front is pretty much bolt-in, but the rear 8.8 will require spring perch relocation. Not sure about how level things will sit, as I have not personally done that swap. You can probably swap out to discs from a newer Explorer / Ranger / Mustang on the rear 8.8, again, I have not done that swap. Also, keep in mind there are two different size drums on both the 7.5 and 8.8: I believe the Explorers all had the 10" drums and Rangers were either 9" or 10" depending on year / application / model / etc.
