Hi all, first post here so thanks in advance for all of the info I have gotten just from searching around.
I have a '04 EB 6.8 that I tow a 7000 lb TT about 5,000/year. I have noticed a crack at the top on both sides of the hitch where the receiver fits in. The band on theoutside is intact but I would not want the hitch to pull apart on the road. Is this a disaster in the making? I use an equalizer hitch that was set up by my RV dealer, and the cracks are maybe 1 inch long and hairline.
Is this the factory unit? or aftermarket?
what is the mileage on your truck, and is the truck still under warranty? (extended-etc.)
If so, check with dealer about this. Any crack in steel that is placed under stress is a potential accident waiting to happen.
We can not see the crack, so we can only guess. Check with the dealer, then check with a trailer/hitch company for their professional assesment. Double check your towing set up with them too.
Last resort- buy a new receiver, just to be safe.
The truck has 42,000 miles it is the factory equipment and no more warrenty coverage. I figured I would need to replace it, but just thought I would throw it out there to see if any one else had this problem. Still trying to figure out how it happened though, it seems like the only way would be up force from the trailer on the hitch because the cracks are on the top. The wieght distributing hitch setup seems fine, truck is level. After replacement I willhave theh hitch setup reviewed to make sure I don't break another one.
I just changed from a '98 Suburban to my '01 X and when I went to put the hitch from the old one into the receiver on the X,I noticed that there was a 2" difference in how far the hitch went into the X. I also have a standard Reese hitch with a 1" drop and a 2" ball and that does the same thing. I would wonder if putting that much extra stress on the receiver would cause it to stress over a period of time..The extra stress from a tt with a 900# tongue weight is gonna have to give somewhere and the 2" solid bar on the hitch is gonna last a lot longer than the end of the receiver..I have a friend that is a Ford dealer and he saw it and wondered the same thing.. I know that there are problems with the newer style GM hitches and mebbee Ford is having the same type of problems...
