A friend has a 99 PS that will not start. The fuel pump is not pumping, the fuel bowl is empty. I put my hand on the pump and I can feel something like it is trying to kick in but won't run. It feels kind of like a solenoid kicking in. They checked it this afternoon and said there was not any voltage going to the pump. They were checking a relay behind the radio I believe this afternoon. What was I feeling when the key was turned on? Anybody have any suggestions?
Had the same prob on my 99 last year. Wound up being the heating element in the water seperator going bad and causing a short in the electrical system. Took 2 days to trace it down
Check all of your fuses and relays. Then, since the fuel bowl is dry but the pump sounds like it is running, be careful. The pump needs fuel to lubricate itself. I recommend opening the filter bowl and slowly filling it with fresh clean diesel. Wait for it to work its way down to the pump. Air should bleed out the top and keep topping it off. When no more air comes out, cap the bowl and give her a try. If that does not work, the fuse relay thing is an issue. If it makes a clicking sound, might be time to check the batteries.
Well, thanks for the update. Perhaps a rubber mallet to the pump body may need to be added to the troubleshooting procedure here. Kinda jar those brushes. Of course this after testing for voltage at the leads. Glad it's fixed.
