If you want overdrive, you've got a couple choices, either shell out about $2700 for a Gear Venders Overdrive for the C-6 ($2700 buys a LOT of gas, probably more than you'll ever burn in the mileage difference) Or gear the rearend up to something like 2.50's to 2.75's. The 428 has Plenty of torque to handle steep rear gears.
There are adaptors available for the AOD transmission. They aren't cheap....I think around $700. The AOD can't take the HP that a C6 can take either....however they can be built to hold up behind most FE builds. Still it probably would never pay for itself in gas mileage savings. I actually was planning on doing this on my truck at one point....the economics didn't justify it and it's pretty hard to beat a C6 for a durable automatic so I never did the change.
Think I will leave well enough alone, if the C6 needs a rebuild will go ahead and rebuild it, the gear venders O/D is a little to pricy I think. Thanks guy's
Great thing about the C-6: It's a tough transmission , my 68 Merc had it and worked fine even though it was 38 years old and never been rebuilt, oil changed once that i know of. When they do need a rebuild, they don't cost you $1500+ dollars to do. About a third that is more like it.
