This site is great. I just found it today and have already found a post to help me fix a fuel leak at the filter drain hose.
However I could not find any reference to a problem I have with the brake light icon on the instrument panel staying on. I think it came on when I had a very near miss, someone pulling out in front of me.
The truck is a 2000 F350 crew cab dually 7.3 psd. auto, 46k miles. It is not driven much at all just used to pull a race car trailer. I hooked up my superchip programmer but it did not show any active codes (alarms)?
Any ideas what I should look at? Thanks
It sounds like the float in your master cylinder is stuck. Try rapping the master cylinder plastic reservoir with a screwdriver handle a few times. If that doesn't work, open the reservoir and check the brake fluid level. If it's OK, take a clean screwdriver and push the float in the M/C fill opening down and let it float again. That should fix the light.
Thanks for the reply. I checked the brake fluid level and it appears to be ok. I tapped on the MC and then opened it up. I did not see a float but stuck a screwdriver through the x shaped opening under the cap. I thought I could feel something so I pushed it several times. When I started the truck the light went off then flickered a couple of times and came back on steady. The fluid looked a little dark too.
There should be an electrical connector on the side of the brake fluid reservoir. Disconnect it and see if the light stays off--If it does, that float switch is bad. I think you can get just the reservoir & switch from your Ford dealer.
Thanks, I saw the connection. I will try that today. I also have been calling the light on the dash the "brake" light. Just to make sure I am not confusing the issue it is actually the ABS light.
I disconnected the electrical connector on the side of the master cylinder. The "Brake" light came on. The abs light stayed on also. I reconnected the connector and the brake light went off but the ABS light stayed on. I tried disconnecting the batteries for awhile to see if this would clear some kind of a fault but after reconnecting the batteries the ABS light came back on. I checked all the fuses again that are tied to the abs system too. All ok. I guess it is time to buy a service manual.
