95 PSD running rough.

I know this has been talked about but I'm not sure on how to search for topics.

So here goes.

140K miles, I have had it for a month.
Maintenance has been by the book since new. I replaced teh fuel filter when I got it and have run lucas diesel additive in every tank. This evening coming into the subdivision I was driving at a steady 25mph. Y0u can here the motor, kinda surging or something. Say between 50 @ 150 rpm. Sped up to about 35 and once I "leveled off" it started again. Kinda like I have a very shakey foot

You have surging between 50 @ 150 RPM??? Idle is supposed to be ~650 rpm. IF the engine is lugging down that low your torque converter may be locked when it's not supposed to be. That will definatley make it run like crap or stall out.

Old oil can cause an eratic idle. Change the oil & filter if it's due.

Have it scanned even if the SES light isn't on. IT will help point you in the right direction. Some Autozones are capable of scanning our diesels, not all of then tho.

You could have a bad TPS, it's actually the accelerater pedal assembly.

Sorry for the confusion. Last night wheen i noticed it so bad I was running approx 1000 rpm. I was trying to hold it steady but I could here the motor fluctuating between 50 & 150 RPM. Pedal is very smooth. Its just coming up on 5K miles since the last oil change.

OK, Got it now. You will not feel anything diffenent in the pedal it's electronic, Could be a dead spot in the TPS. Changing the oil may clear it up tho. New oil makes a big difference in the idle quality and even through out the rpm range.

I'm gonna change the oil this week before t-giving. I'm thinking abut going to royal purple. But, I drive 5k miles in about 6 wks. thats gonna get a little expensive. Is it worth it. I keep vehicle a long time. My last truck had 414K and it was gas. What does most people use

A good diesel rated oil like Rotella or Delo for general use. Synthetics are for those who pull heavy or just beat the snot out of the truck IMO. IF your in a cold climate use 10w30 and 15w40 in the warmer areas of the contry. Sounds like your good to your vehicles, 414K on a gasser, just use dino oil and change it on time. My 2 cents.

Let us know if the oil change affects the idle.
