I have a 99 Expedition and the it just started sputtering when accelerating up to 50 mph. The Check Engine Light came on and the code reads P0402. This directs me to think that it may be the EGR Valve. My SUV has 152,000 miles on it. It seems to idle fine.
Should I try to replace the EGR Valve before sending it to a professional?
I don't believe that's caused by the EGR. However, it's a cheap and easy replacement that might be worth trying before you take it to the shop. I have a PO400 code, which for my 2000 Expy states "insufficient air flow". I've replaced the EGR and it's still giving me that code. So, the code may indicate EGR, but it could be something else causing the problem. The sputtering almost seems like it could be one of your spark plug coils going bad. I've had to replace 2 or 3 of those.
Ford's DPFE sensors are total crap from that era. Ford issued a TSB for those codes to automatically replace the sensor without doing any further testing. Only do additional diagnostics if the code comes back.
