Well you guys helped me out earlier today with my fuel pump problem so I'm gonna ask you about another problem i've been having since i bought my pickup about five years ago. I have a 94 f-150 with a 302 and 204,000 miles. I put maybe 10,000 miles on it in a year since i got it and my cap and rotor get corroded really fast. I replace them 3-4 times a year to keep it running smooth. I've tried everything from a cap and rotor for $10 up to the expensive all copper sets and there's no difference. I'm sure thats not how its supposed to be but everyone tells me thats the way they are. Can i do anything to fix this??
Mine does exactly the same thing though not quite as bad as you describe, where do you live?? I am in Florida where we have alot of humidity and I think that can cause this situation.
check your engine ground. sometimes a bad ground can cause electrolysis. this usually happens in the cooling/heating system but it might cause the type of corrosion you're talking about.
Just a thought. Try spraying the exterior of the cap and with silicone spray or wd-40 to help displace moisture once in a while and see if that has any effect to what is going on.
I had this problem years back, when I was offroading alot. The water was getting inside of the cap from the outside climate. What I did was put a small layer of silicon on the cap when I attached it down. I used clear. It came off easliy when I removed the cap to change the rotor and the cap off. And it kept it dry. I dont know if this is a good fix for everyone but it worked for me.
I have found that the cap on these trucks is not all that water tight. I use to clean the engine bay regular and despite being careful I would always get a little water inside the cap. I stopped the cleaning because of that and it actually created more problems with some of the wiring connectors.
Well I have a new cap and rotor on hand so maybe ill put them in and try the silicone thing and see what happens. Is there anything else in the distributor i should be replacing as well?
Well thanks guys you have been very helpful to me in the last few days. I am really beginning to like this forum. I have learned a lot about my pickup just by reading other posts on here. Maybe ill keep asking ?s about all the things wrong with my pickup and actually get some of it fixed. LOL Heres a list of what needs to be fixed on the poor thing.
Multi-function switch is bad i think because to get the wipers to work i have to turn them to the on position and then bump the switch up to get them to wipe when my windshield gets too much water on it. If its raining hard i have to hold it up to keep it going.
M5R2 tranny leaks where the main housing meets the extension housing. Took that apart and cleaned the surfaces up and resealed it with anerobic gasket maker and it didn't leak for a day but then started leaking again. This is the used replacement tranny i put in after the fluid was low in my old one and wrecked the bearings. I will have the old one rebuilt.
Lots of play in the transfer case.
Passenger power window tilts toward the back when i roll it down and when i roll it back up it levels out again.
Possible timing chain noise??
And of course the infamous power steering pump that ford has that seems to be louder than anything else when turning the wheel.
I'm sure there is more but it gets me where im goin neways and it has 204,000 miles on it.
