Engine oil recommendation
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Jun-02 AT 10:55 PM (EST)]My 1952 F4 has what I am told a 1965 223 6cyl. What type of oil should be used? Straight weight/multigrade, detergent/non-detergent. Thanks!

In my '62 223 I run 30w. Stay away from non-detergent oil as you will build up a lot of sludge. I would also suggest dropping the oil pan and scraping out the sludge that I'm sure has already gathered there, and running some motor flush through it. The only problem with doing this is if the engine hasn't been properly maintained (regular oil changes and the like) it could start knocking if the bearings are worn.

Ive been advised to stay away from 10W40.
Use 10W30 or 20W50 in SJ/SL grades only. I prefer Castrol GTX and dont use any of the parrafin based brands.
Also dont use racing oils, they dont have the additives/protection needed for regular driving.
