Radiator support pads

My books show a single radiator support pad yet a single pad does not expose enough threads on either the original carriage bolt or my fancy new stainless bolts to tighten down. I know I am going to have to fiddle with things to get the proper fit. Perhaps another dumb question but-does anyone know if a single pad is used or multiple pads on a 48 F1? I do not remember how many came off on disassembly. It's been 5 loong years!

Let me clarify my prior post.

The stock and stainless carriage bolts are identical and are only threaded 1 1/2 inches up and smooth the rest of the way up. One pad will not allow me to tighten things up since I run out of threads. Therefore, I think I need several pads since I am having the same problem with the original bolt. The book only shows one pad. Washers under the nut are not the answer since it would take way too many washers to qualify as "bonus built".

Hope this makes more sense and descriptive of my problem. I guess I have burned another week while waiting for another pad or two unless someone here can shed some light.

I'll have to look on mine but I can tell you right now that some of the parts you buy from these part stores do not always fit. For instance...I installed new motor mounts on mine and the motor was not supported high enough by these mounts for the lower wheel of the water pump belt to clear the frame of the truck. I needed to include 4-5 metal washers to support it in addition to the motor mounts I was sent. I do know that in the 67 f-100...there are two mounts..one for each side..

There is only one pad under the radiator support. it's about 5/16-3/8 inch thick. I get the feeling you're saying the bolts are too long? Don't forget the 2 springs that go under the frame on the bottom side. The carriage bolts go thru them and a washer and nut go on. Remember, the front end has to "float" and accomplishes this with the 2 springs. You don't bolt it down tight.

Barry:

Thank You! I am missing the springs. I guess I will spend this rainy day looking for them. Makes sense the thing needs to float. I do not understand why my book does not show them.

I bought some parts from a "Barry" up in the great NorthEast. One and the same?

I had the same problem with the stainless screw when I did my '59's radiator. I used one pad between the frame and the radiator because that's how it came in the kit. Got the pad kit from Sacramento Vintage Ford (1-888-FORD-100) or www.vintage-ford.com. I am looking it up for you in their catalog as we speak, and for your '48, it's part # 7645 (fits '48-52).

To solve the "not enough threads to screw it back on" dilemma, I just got longer stainless screws at the hardware store, and viola!!!

Hope this helps...
Daryl

Daryl, re-read #'s 3 and 4. His problem is that he was missing the 2 "coil" springs that go under the crossmember where the bolts go thru. That make the whole nose of the truck able to rock or "float". The cab of these trucks are technically separate from the rest of the sheetmetal, allowing a better ride, or so they said back then. The later trucks like yours, the support is bolted down for no movement.
