I am one happy camper.I now own a '48 F1!!!1/2 ton.
This truck has been in the family since 1980.It was my uncles who turned it into a stock show truck. He went into the Air Force and moved all over while the truck sat in heated garage from '83-now.It has one rust spot in the pass side inner fender big as a qaurter!Thats it.He had sold the flatty4 last year and got the fever to build the truck again. It come with a '72 302 with 2300 bucks worth of reciepts,it was built last year.Truck is stock with nice single stage metallic blue paint.
My goals are this:
I want to put it on the road for mainly in town duty.It came with a FMX and 8" from the Mustang the engine came from.
Do i want that FMX?Or should i build a C4?Also are '48's wide as newer trucks?I have a 9" also myself from a '69 Ranger.I am new to the old trucks and alreay is a breath of fresh air from the '60/'70's i have been building.Oh,i forgot,I am on a budjet but have plenty of tools and skills.I just would love for alot of opinions on what drivetrain to use.The 302 is a given,it's done.Oh,Also came with a '66 289 4v intake,he said it was rare.Is it?
Thanks for any trans, rear end, engine, tranny mount info!!I am a long time FTE member and will be hangin in this forum from now on!
Chanks
I love restored vechicles, and i understand Ford doesn't build '48's anymore. But not only do i not have the flatty,i dont personally want a stock truck.I am not welding the front fenders/hoor together,or welding on a chebby front clip with a 350/350 combo.I hate that.
This one is staying all Ford and sorry,I like power rode in the truck with the four, that was boring.
This truck could always be put back to OE so thats all i can say.Sorry.
Pics soon!!!
Congrats! Welcome to the club and thanks for keeping it all Ford.
I'm not familiar enough with the fmx vs. the C4 to recommend one over the other. If you have a 69 9" from a pickup, it'll bolt right under your '48. I have one from a '65 under my 48.
I also like 302's and if I didn't have a flathead V8 in mine, a 302 would be my first choice. The 48 including a 550# flathead weighs only about 3400 lbs.
Build it like you want it and don't look back. (But it doesn't hurt to save any crossmembers you remove in case you want to restore it someday - and don't write off those built 4's with the right speed equipment)
When you drive it down the road with a huge grin on your face, you'll know you did the right thing. Have fun and get some pictures for us to see.
Thanks alot Tim for all the info/opinions.Yeah,I wouldn't throw anything out the door for it.
This truck does have some cool stuff already done.My uncle milled a peice of stainless steel for the instrument cluster and put AutoMeter bubble face oldie gages in the plate.Awesome!Truck is still 6v though.I am going to convert it to 12v with a Painless system, and find what they call it so i can drop the voltage going to heater fan so to keep it 6v.
Mainly interested in 302 engine perches, location, and tranny mounts.
Thanks!
Well,I can only suggest that all ford is the way to go,at least for my own tastes.I'm currently resto-rod building an F-47(Canadian Ford version of the U.S.A.'s F-1).Nothing at all wrong with a good small block(289 to 351W) and J.C. Whitney offers few FMX transmission rebuild kits.Ford 8 inch rearend is stout enough providing your horsepower goals don't top 375 horsepower.I prefer the 9 incher(3.50-1 ratio) for my own 351C/FMX combo because I'll be getting darn close to 360 h.p..Front disc brakes on the front with the stocker 9 inch grabbers(2 1/4 x 11)that came with my 72 rearend. The thing is to build it to drive it as soon as you can afford to really appreciate that vintage tin.Good luck, hope this helps.
47mech,
Thanks so much for the info.I already love this truck.
I have a 8" and a 9".The 8 has no springs on it and the 9 is ready to go so i will use the 9.
I didnt know if FMX's are way more expensive than the C series or not.
Thanks again!
