E4OD Issues

Hey everyone, got some problems with my E4OD. It's in a 1990 F-150 XLT Lariat 2WD 300-6 got about 140,000 miles. The tranny has been slipping, high rev shifting, not shifting at the right times (late) until I let off the gas a little. Worse yet, the truck started to shake (vibration from center and rear) at about 60MPH and a little every now and then on takeoff. Now, it shakes whenever the load is even gentle acceleration on a gentle slope. If I shift into 1 on the selector, it accelerates perfectly, but anything else, and it messes up. I have been hearing that it might just be electrical, and would like as much information on that as I can get. I haven't been able to find much online (don't know where to look). The closest decent tranny shop is about 40 miles away, as is now, I don't think the truck would make it. It hardly goes 55 any more.

Its not electrical. The shudder you feel is the transmission slipping. What you are describing (slipping, shudder, late shift, flare on shift) are classic loss of line pressure symptoms.

Unfortunately, you will need an overhaul. Garanteed.

The reason it doesn't shudder/slip in manual low on takeoff is a second set of clutches is applied in manual low. Try driving it to the trans shop in 3rd gear instead of OD. I but it makes it.

Well, if it is line pressure, what things might be causing the problem?

Worn valves, worn springs, worn clutches, dirty fluid, low fluid.......

Start by flushing the fluid. That will rarely work, but will eliminate the easy fix. Otherwise you will be in need of seriuos work.

Yup, but more likely, hard or cut piston seals, worn bushings, worn boost valve or even the pump body worn.

Alright, I can defiantly accept that I can't do this one in my garage. Anyone know what they paid / would charge / got charged for the rebuild I need? (just rough estimates for informative purposes)

Well, a bad news update. I was driving on a side road, and I hear a clunk, truck kept moving so I treated it like all the other clunks my truck makes. This time though, I lost all my forward gears, and had to drive home in R. Unsure if this is the same problem I've been having only more severe, or a different issue.

Good call, I am a little new to autos so I didn't think about those parts.

You can get a rebuilt one with warranty for 850ish. Check eBay. If you are forced to buy locally make sure you are ready to haggle. You could easily be charged $4000.

Good luck,
Mike

Mike, unfortunately, I have a lot of experience with autos and this unit in particular. I owned a trans shop for several years.

Vantss; I would steer clear of the cheapie remans on ebay. Good remans start at about $1000 and you can get good ones for $1000 to $1300. Stay clear of cheapie rebuild in the truck too. $1500 is too cheap to do a proper job and make a living. Figure a proper rebuild starting at about $1800 and going as high as $2500. You should be able to have a reputable shop do a proper job in this pricerange. Anybody charging less is ripping you off.

Loosing all of the foreward gears means you probably lost the foreward clutches. Further problems resulting from whatever the original problem was.

Its a lot of work to do the manual conversion and the PCM is going to set a code when it doesn't see the transmission. I can't imagine it would be worth the trouble.
