1995 E-150 Club Wagon with 190,000 miles. After recent servicing, the differential "howls" on acceleration and cruise. The noise dissipates considerably on slow down. Any ideas? As I understand it an axle bearing and pinion seal were replaced recently.
My first thought is that whoever did the work over torqued the pinion nut and didn't use a new crush sleeve when they changed the pinion seal.
Or, it could be the axle bearing was installed on a worn axle. There are repair bearings available that offset the rollers to a new surface of the axle. If you install a new standard bearing on the worn/pitted axle surface it will make noise.
Incidently, my van is a '95 E-150 Clubwagon XLT with 255,000 miles. I changed the ring and pinion (to re-gear it) at about 200k miles. It had one axle bearing that needed to be changed but other than that it was perfect.
