Talking Howd' they do that?

How did they get 30 more horses out of the 351 5.8l engine. I have a 1988 F150 and it has 210hp. The Lightening has the same engine, and 30 more horseys and the same engine. How'd they do it? Oh, and by the way I just bought this 1988 for $300, it has 4wd, little rust, and 112K miles. Not bad... XLT Lariat too... Can anybody answer that question?

The lightning engine had GT40 heads and intake manifold I believe (maybe a roller cam?) and I'm sure it had some special tuning in the computer. Blurry94 can tell you I'm sure.

The answer? Airflow. An engine is an airpump, the more efficient you can make it at pumping air the more power it'll make. Things like higher flowing heads and intakes, headers, and performance camshafts all contribute to improving airflow. Adding or changing these parts on your '88 will yield the same benifits.

The stock lightning 5.8 had a mild flat tappet cam, and speed density. The computor was programed for the motor. The intake manifold was indeed the tubular GT40 set up, way different from a stock truck EFI setup. The lightning is good example of how important the heads, and their airflow numbers are. BTW, with headers and a high flowing exaust system, the HP was an easy 310.
