new shocks for 02 FX4

Moved my truck in the garage last night and the dayme thing left a wet spot on the floor. Oil, get to looking and found the shock leaked from a pinhole (rusty) in the bottom. Truck only has 42K, sits mostly in a climate controlled garage.....

Well anyways need to replace them. I seen the threads on the rs5000 Rancho and the mention of Bilstein shocks.

My question is, what is the compressed length, and extended lengths? My friend has 4x4 off-road model and my FX4 appears to have a higher lift suspension. Both stock.

The reason I am asking because when looking online most sites only mention heavy duty if they mention differences.

Are they same or different in lengths. My guess on the heavy duty is the valving.

Thanks in advance

BTW sure do miss that search button!!

By and large, you're going to find that all shocks listed for your truck, despite the make and model, will have a disclaimer about them not being intended for lifted trucks. What this says, generally, is that they all have about the same travel. Surely, shirley, there have to be differences in the amount of travel each provides, but that's going to be up to you to get the data on (very difficult to find for some of them, that I've seen, will probably have to call the makers' tech departments themselves to get it).

A 'heavy-duty' designation can mean the shock will be valved for heavier loads, but it can also mean the shock is made to last longer and to not overheat when used repetitively. I don't think there's any true definition of 'heavy duty' in the industry, so one company's HD shocks are going to be different from another's on some level.

The guys that hang out in the 4x4 forum probably have some of the length stats you're looking for.

you could unbolt one end of the shock and measure it at full extension and fully compressed

I would measure center of bolt holes

Thanks for the replies,
Pulling them off tonight and going to measure them just to be safe. Just figured I would ask so I have the replacement ready to go on. Not a big deal, it is not my daily driver.

I will post the measurements, may help someone else in the future.

Good, a nice the to do.

Also, just in case, there is the Heavy Duty payload option for these trucks. Just want to make sure there is no confusion with that option. I believe they do use a different shock.

Bilstein calls most of there replacement (non lifted/lowered applications) shocks HD or Sport, I don't believe there's a sport model for these trucks.
