Anyone know why my brake lights might come on with the truck parked and not running? Just the brake lights, and nothing else. I have a trailer brake controller installed...maybe this is the cause? Oh...no pets or kids inside, either...
The first place I'd look would be the stoplight switch. That's right there under the dash on the lever part of the brake pedal. The thing to watch there is that you keep the orientation of the pins and washers if you take it out.
The only other thing you might look into would be the brake controller harness if you wired that up yourself. You'll want to make sure there is no short between the brake control power supply and your brake switch signal wire.
I know I remember reading some post's of people having this caused by a faulty brake controller before. I think there may have been a certain brand/model that caused this. I would try a search.
My 04 did the same thing ,the brake lights would come on out of the blue , sometimes a few seconds or minutes , I bought a new brake switch , not the problem , then I started to put a chair in the driveway waiting for it to happen , when it did I noticed that the brake controller was lit up , bingo ! I called the company that made it (Valley ) and the person told me that they had some software issues that caused that exact problem to happen , they asked me for my model number /address and sent me a new one in advance , and picked up the old one , can't beat there service anyway , problem solved !, Craig.
Would you believe that my controller is a Valley model? I'm going to contact Valley right now, and see if I can't get this gremlin out of my 250. Thanks to all who responded--you're a tremendous resource!
A little more info: I just spoke with Jerry at Valley Industries. The problem with my brake controller (model 52740) is contamination, which causes an intermittent short, activating my brake lights. He says the switch is self cleaning, so activating the switch 15-20 times cleans the contacts. He suggested I try this, and offered to replace the unit if this doesn't work. Nice to find a company that stands behind their products....
