My odometer and trip meter have quick working on my STX 06 f150, out of warranty at 38,000 miles, took it to the dealer and they said it was probably a loose wire, of course they would not tell me where to check, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
"a loose wire". I love that one. I believe these trucks have an electronic dash, so if you can take the gauge cluster out and check all the connections behind the dash, that's a place to start. But unless you're hitting some major potholes or off-roading alot, the main concern is why the "wire" came loose, if it did. I think its more likely you have a faulty display unit, which may affect the speedo as well. These two can also affect the transmission, so if a wire is loose and the unit isn't functioning properly, you may notice shifting irregularities. Just a few ideas...
1. have you installed an aftermarket stereo?
2. have you unplugged the battery recently?
if yes, you might want to pop the original stereo in there real quick and see if the indication comes back on. The reason I say this is because my radio controls the dash display.
Have you been getting services done at your dealer. If you have kept the dealer happy since purchasing it they have a vested interest in your satisfaction and with such low mileage past the warranty expiration you could request assistance from ford where you would pay a small percentage and they cover the rest. Its done every single day at my dealership for our customers.
yes, the radio does control the dash display in my truck. It may not be the radio per say, but it is part of that integrated radio/ashtray thing in the center of the dash.
apparently it still works when aftermarket radios are installed, but I wonder what would happen if you were to change out the battery. I'm not curious enough to find out on my own. I'm actually pretty happy with the stock head unit
tylus, took it to the dealer and was told what it would cost to find the problem, dang near had the big one, this dealer has a not so great service department, I really believe the wire is loose behind the odometer and trip readout display, I just don't know what color wire to look for and the dealer sure isn't going to tell me
CHILTON or HAYNES. They have the wire schematic in the back just before the index that tells you the colors. What were they wanting? I've been quoted $125.00 for a Electrical Diagnostic plus $90 an hour in labor before to verify my 4x4 didn't work on a Bronco. I'm thinking they told you something similar. Don't forget, they'll also charge you for parts.
Unfortunately, it's not the sale of a vehicle where they make the most money, it's the service of these vehicles.
Another avenue to go if the loose wire isn't the issue, find a instrument cluster out of a wrecked truck and swap it in. The "setback" of doing this is you'll now have the mileage of the other truck and can get slapped with odometer fraud if you don't report the swap out. I've seen these things occasionally on Ebay brand new if junk yard isn't your style. Just be sure to inform your state.
Going to try and fix this myself, when I get behind the dash, I guess I can figure out where the odometer is and what wire to look for, any suggestions would be appreciated
