When I got my 95 Aerostar, it came without a spare of any kind. From what I can tell it mounts beneath the vehicle, however, by just looking at it, I can't really tell how. Any info on this would be helpful.
What may not be so apparent, even in VanGo's excellent illustration, is the "winder" mechanism for the spare tire. Look closely in the middle at the area where the van floor meets the rear bumper. There should be a small (0.5-0.75 in) access hole visible. The tire iron (or long flat screwdriver) fits into the hole and operates the "winder" to raise and lower the spare tire. Be aware there were two versions of spare tires. A smaller 'space-saver' version and a full size spare.
In some rust belt climes, the retaining cable rusts through and the entire spare drops away - much to the consternation of any following drivers. If your's does not have the bell-shaped center hole support/lifter attached to the cable this may be what happened to your spare.
