A/C leak

I have a 94 Aerostar w/4.0 and rear A/C. presently 135,000 mi. The A/C has probably been used for at least 100,000 of those miles. Never a problem of any kind with the a/c before.
A/C stopped working, figuring low on refrigerant (134A) attempted to add. Immediately would leak out what appeared to be a relief valve or? at the top rear of the compressor. Is this a relief valve? Do they inadvertently fail or do I possibly have an internal problem that caused it to pop off? Are these "one shot" items?

I wish I could do a search but I do not have the required 25 posts to enable it. I did find one thread talking about various designations for a/c. Anyone know off hand which one I may have?

Any replies appreciated.

Welcome Joe to FTE Aerostar forum!

There is a pressure relief valve on the compressor. It is unusual for it to behave in the manner you describe. It could be stuck in the open position. Perhaps a little light tapping will cause it to close again. There is also a manifold fitting for the high pressure line back there as well. Check the securing bolt to see if it is tight. On the 4.0 compressor, you can easily remove the four long hold down bolts and move the entire compressor assembly (with hoses) to the front grill area in order to inspect the rear of the compressor. (Unplug the electrical connector to the clutch beforehand). Once you do this, you should be able to see if refrigerant is leaking from the relief valve or manifold connection.

Check the engine fan clutch and fan. If that doesn't work you end up with high pressure in the condenser and the compressor, which is why the relief valve is there.

It is definitely leaking from the pressure relief valve and there is NO Pressure in the system. I assume that the pressure relief valve should act like normal ones in that once the excess pressure is relieved they return to a closed position. I will try the tapping method and see if the clutch fan works. Wife has the van all of today. Thanks very much for the replies.
