I'm new to this, so this will sound like a pretty dumb question, but any help you can give a newbie is appreciated.
I have a 58 F-100 that I will be converting over to power steering using the Toyota kit from Bob's F-100. I have a 68 302 motor and am looking for a pump and bracket that will work with this set up. Any advice? I've tried the junkyard, but unfortunately I'm just not one of those guys that can tell you how many cubic inches a motor is by looking at it. The auto parts stores can sell me the pump without the bracket or pulleys, but then I'm stuck trying to find those parts.
Can anyone tell me what year and model came with a 302 besides the mustang? Or maybe a place that can sell me the pump, bracket and pulley for a 302? Can I use a diffent pump altogether?
Any advice is welcome. Bob's F-100 doesn't want to send me the hoses without knowing which pump I'm using.
look for the sticker on the core support, or the valve cover. it will have something like engine family 5.0. just about any ford car from 67 on up will work, as long as it is a 5.0. when you find one make sure it doesnt have a flat pulley. get all the bolts, brackets. and anything else you might need at the same time.
Chris I had the same problem, not all pumps on the 302's will work. I have a 72 302 and I found one out of a 68 fairlane that worked. On mine, two of the bolts on the bracket had to match up with two of the holes on the water pump, what I did was I took my water pump gasket around to a few wrecking yards and looked to see if any of the brackets matched up to the two holes on the gasket, if you only find the bracket then you can get the numbers off the bracket and give them to the part store and they will be able to order the pump for you. If yours is a 302 then look for the same location of the thermostat as yours, the 351 is different and it's wider.
Thanks for the great tips. I came home with the wrong pump and bracket on my first trip to the wrecking yard, so I'll be heading back for another attempt this week armed with the information you guys have provided me. Thanks again for the help.
