Yes I'm having problems with the idle and think there might be a problem with the throttle positioner or with both .

Well can you describe the kind of idle problems your having????

Did the idle problem begin suddenly, after some event, or slowly over time????

Are you having any other problems that began at the same time, like driveability, accelleration, gas mileage change, warm or cold start probems, ect?????

We bought the truck for my son and it already had the problem. It runs good and starts up like nothing is wrong.I have notice the water temperature takes awhile to heat up.I'm not sure thats some of the problem too.As for the idling it feels like its surging and it does that in park or drive.

yes, check your PCV valve. if it's bad it will create the vac leak which in turn sets the CEL and code for the IAC overspeed error.

ford ranger idle

I disconnected the idle position sensor and the truck idles fine and the truck doesn't surge anymore. What I notice having the idle position sensor disconnected the tranmission shifts differently now.Now I think the idle positioner might be the trouble the whole time.

there's 2 things we talk about the IAC (idle air control solenoid) and the TPS (throttle position sensor) which one do you refer to?

What are you refering to, as the "idle positioner"????

Are you talking about the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), or the IAC (Idle Air Control)????

There are further tests you can do with an ohm meter, to determine if they are faulty.

Maybe hook up a scan tool & monitor the TPS & IAC, to see what's happening with them.

Maybe even have a computer scan done for stored trouble codes. Codes can be stored, but not turn on a trouble light.

If you don't own, or have access to, a code reader, or scan tool, most autoparts stores will do a no cost computer scan, if your having problems.

I changed out the throttle positioner sensor and that cured the problem with the idle.I notice the potentiometer was really loose where it slips on the shaft.
Theres no more surging with the idle now.
Thanks for all the help.
