I have a 98 Explorer Limited that has suppossedly jumped time.
This happened as I started up yesterday morning so, it was not at a high rpm when it happened. Previous day, no problems at all. It was quite a surprise. Since the engine was not at a high idle, would it be worth it to just rebuild the heads and try to get a few more miles out of it?
There are 120,000 miles on the car and I'm not sure it's worth the $4,500.00 for a remanufactured engine.
Are you saying that the timing chain/gears broke? Also, what motor is it, and what makes you think you need a new engine? If it is an interfernce engine, I think you would have to pull the heads before you can assess the damage.
Hey Marragtop, meant to put that in previous and forgot. Engine is 4.0 sohc. I believe that is an inteference engine. Chain/gears did not break. It will start but will not run much above 1000 rpms. It will idle at around 400 rpms with a whole lot of clicking. At first I though it was a stuck valve. Dealer said it jumped time. Would it be worth it to just rebuild the heads and go from there taking a chance on the lower engine components? I guess there position is by the time you replace all the chains and gears, you have paid for a new engine but, still have the old.
